Kogi Guber Polls: INEC Reduces Observers

The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Thursday that it thoroughly screened and reduced the number of observers that would monitor the forth-coming governorship election in Kogi.
Head, Civil Society Organizations Unit, INEC, Mrs. Rose Oriaran, stated this at a meeting with representatives of civil society organisation in Lokoja.
She explained that the measure was to avoid infiltration into the electoral process by political agents, who had been masquerading as observers.
Oriaran added that the step was also part of efforts by INEC to organise a free and credible election in the state.
She expressed appreciation of the commission for civil society groups’ contributions to the successes of past elections.
She, however, disclosed that INEC had come to a stage when it would separate the wheat from the chaff “as far as election monitoring was concerned.”
The unit head said the commission was bent on correcting past mistakes where some groups offered to be election observers only to turn out to be politicians.
She appealed to groups in the state to show understanding and continue to be good partners with the commission in its quest to provide a credible electoral process to the nation.
She also advised youths in the state not to allow themselves to be used as thugs by unscrupulous politicians during the election.

Niger Army Kill 30 Boko Haram Militants – Sources

Nigerien army have killed not less than 30 suspected Boko Haram fighters as it searched for militants in villages just over the border with Nigeria, security sources said.
The army launched the operation on Thursday, a day after gunmen thought to be from Boko Haram crossed over from Nigeria and killed at least a dozen villagers on the Niger side of the border.
Boko Haram has fought a six-year insurgency to carve out an Islamist state in northeast Nigeria, and continues to carry out cross-border attacks, in the face of a military campaign bolstered by Nigeria's neighbours Niger, Cameroon and Chad.
"Our defence forces who are engaged in the operation inside Nigeria between the towns of Malam Fatori and Damasak, killed the insurgents on Thursday," a security source said, requesting not to be named.
Boko Haram has started calling itself the Islamic State's "West Africa Province" since pledging allegiance in March to the hardline militant group which controls large areas of Syria and Iraq.
Early on Friday, two suicide bombers, an elderly woman and a 10-year-old girl, killed at least nine people in the northeastern Nigerian city of Damaturu as worshippers gathered to mark the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday, a military spokesman said.
Boko Haram has targeted security forces, schools and other Muslim communities who do not share its hardline version of Islam.

NAWA O!!! Brazil Investigates Former President For Corruption

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

Federal prosecutors in Brazil have opened a formal inquiry into possible “influence peddling” by former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The investigation will look into whether Lula improperly used his connections overseas to benefit Latin America’s largest engineering firm, Odebrecht.
In May, prosecutors in the capital Brasilia said they had opened a preliminary investigation into the matter, saying the former leader had frequently travelled abroad at Odebrecht’s expense after leaving office, from 2011 until 2014.
The inquiry announced on Thurday puts the legacy of one of Brazil’s most popular former leaders on the line at a time when some are calling for the impeachment of his chosen successor, President Dilma Rousseff, for alleged campaign finance irregularities.
A spokeswoman for Lula’s institute, the Instituto Lula, said the institute was surprised by the news, and thought the inquiry had been escalated too quickly, the Reuters news agency said. She added that Lula’s travels were completely legal.
In their preliminary inquiry, prosecutors cited media reports that Brazil-based Odebrecht had won contracts in countries including the Dominican Republic and Cuba after Lula met with their leaders, travelling at Odebrecht’s expense.
Lula may have also improperly influenced Luciano Coutinho, president of the state-run development bank BNDES, when it approved loans for Odebrecht projects abroad, prosecutors said.

Navas Is Real Madrid No1 Goalkeeper – Rafa Benitez

Rafa Benitez, Real Madrid Manager

Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez says Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is not his player "at the moment" and revealed Keylor Navas is his current No.1.

De Gea's contract expires at the end of the 2015-16 season, meaning he will then be available as a free agent, but Benitez refused to elaborate on the speculation in Melbourne on Friday.

"De Gea is not our player at the moment and that is not our subject at the moment," Benitez told reporters as Real prepare to kick off their pre-season against Roma in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.

"We have some great goalkeepers here at Real Madrid. Navas is our number one at the moment. I have spoken to him. He is more experienced than our other keepers so he is at the front."

When asked about Real's pursuit of Casilla, Benitez again gave little way, insisting that "it is very hard to bring in players".

"If we have more competition for positions it only means the group and that position gets stronger," Benitez added.

"We are not just competing with a player but with many clubs. All clubs have resources. It is not just the case of a player becoming available."

CHANGE!!! President Buhari Dissolves Few Other Federal Governing Council Boards

President Muhammadu Bugari

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the dissolution of the governing boards of a number of federal agencies and institutions with immediate effect, his spokesman said on Thursday.
It was not immediately clear which bodies were affected by the move.
Until the boards are reconstituted, chief executives of the affected bodies will "refer all matters requiring the attention of their boards to the president" through senior civil servants, said Buhari's spokesman Femi Adesina.
Buhari, who is yet to appoint ministers, was sworn in as president of Africa's most populous country on May 29 after being elected on an anti-corruption ticket.
Last month the president dissolved the board of the state-owned oil company. On Monday he replaced his defence chiefs as part of an attempt to step up the campaign against Boko Haram.

“Boko Haram- ISIS Allegiance Can Enlarge Global Linkage Terror” – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says the alliance of Boko Haram with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has further strengthened the sect.
However, the President said his administration was committed to tackling insecurity, having confirmed that Nigeria has released $21 million to the multi national joint task force to operationalise the force in the battle against insurgency.
President Buhari made this known while speaking at the presidential villa, Abuja on Wednesday during the occasion of the breaking of fast with members of the diplomatic corps.
“It is my pleasure to receive you all today as you join me for the customary practice whereby members of the diplomatic corps mark the lftar here at some point in the course of the holy month of Ramadan,” he said.
“The significance of today’s event is deepened by the fact that this occasion is also my first meeting with members of the diplomatic corps since my assumption of office.
“At the regional level, I started the first week of my presidency with visits to the republics of Niger and Chad and I shall continue with a visit to Cameroun as part of our efforts to collaborate more closely with our partners in the Lake Chad Basin Commission to secure every inch of our territories.
“Only yesterday, we announced a re-jigging of our security architecture to ensure greater momentum. Already, we have released a first tranche of $21 million to operationalise our rejuvenated multi national joint task force, (MNJTF).
“Victory over terrorism in Nigeria is victory for every responsible member of the international community, because as the recent pledge of allegiance to ISIS shows Boko Haram has the capacity to enlarge the global linkage of terror, with negative consequences for international security and stability.
“We would thus welcome the cooperation, solidarity and support of your various countries in our efforts. We shall work tirelessly to re-establish and strengthen the relations subsisting between Nigeria and your various countries.
“A Nigeria that is able and willing to play her role in international stability and development. “We believe that Nigeria’s stability and prosperity would positively impact on our neighbours and contribute to the opening up of Africa as the next frontier of global development.
“We would do all that is necessary domestically, to put us back on the right track.
