Dave Umahi, Ebonyi State Governor |
Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi has said on
Sunday that moves by President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
and some states governors to reduce their salaries by half would be too meagre
to address the current financial problems faced by the country .
He said he would not the train of elected
politicians who have chosen a cut from their salaries, saying, such a measure
was not the solution required to address the current economic drains being
experienced in the country.
Umahi made this known shortly after a closed
door meeting with former president Olusegun Obasanjo in his Abeokuta, Ogun
State Presidential Hilltop Mansion .
The Presidency and some states governors had
announced a reduction in their salaries by fifty per cent as part of the
measures to reduce expenses and save more money for the states.
“I hit the ground running from day one and I
don’t believe in makeshift things. I also don’t believe in if you cut 50
percent of your salary, that is not where the issue is. I think it’s not the
major issue.
“The major issue is to be honest to the
people, it’s to deploy the resources God has given the people, don’t cheat
them, don’t steal their money. What we take as political leaders, what is due
to us is really very meagre.
” I earn about N600,000 a month; so if I cut
it down to 50 percent, that’s N300,000. That is not the kind of money the
society is looking for. They are asking whatever is due to us, give it to us
and I believe in that,” Umahi said.
